OK, so you got the basics down! You are able to center the clay and are starting to feel confident on the wheel. Are you ready for the next challenge? Level up with Intermediate Pottery, this course builds on the fundamentals learned in Beginning Pottery, advancing your knowledge and skill to begin creating larger, more functional, preconceived work, while starting to build a personal artistic aesthetic.

In this course, focus will be on pottery wheel throwing, each week students will focus on a new form based upon the cylinder as a starting point. Projects might include lidded vessels, larger ovoid forms, tea pots, large serving bowls among others. Closer inspection on creating handles, noticing shapes and promoting universal forms will be discussed. Introduction to “throwing off the hump” might also be introduced along with various trimming techniques. Students should have some background or experience with a prior clay class. Void of competition, this class will help foster individual achievement and encourage personal artistic growth.

Presented as an exploratory rather than mass production class, Students will work on refinement of form, theories of function, artistic expression, structural stability, recognize and know how to avoid common mishaps, and begin to work towards a unique, individual style. Class may be taken consecutively.

It is strongly encouraged to take a beginning class at Alley Cat Studios before enrolling in the Intermediate class.
